Smart Irrigation system

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The problem is the continuing decline in the production of our country staple food (Rice); Climate related shocks in recent years have been common, including major drought and inconsistent rainfall in 2015 and August 2019

The sector is dominated by smallholder farmers practicing subsistence farming with traditional methods and limited use of improved irrigation system and Pest and disease control. Deforestation, land degradation and climate change have also affected food production. According to the 2017 climate change vulnerability index (CCVI), production of the country’s staple food, rice, has declined to such an extent that only 4 percent of farmers produce enough to meet the needs of their family for one year. With Sierra Leone being a net importer of rice, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased food prices, and many consumers could easily be priced out due to further market disruptions caused by supply chain restrictions.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

  • Substantial increase in income achieve economic growth, employment and poverty reduction.
  • Irrigation can play a protective role during the period of drought and famines.
  • It can secure uninterrupted agriculture which helps to achieve food security.
  • It reduces labor and expenditure in doing large scale farming.
  • With the help of this irrigation system, the required moisture content, hydrogen and oxygen of soil for the growth of seed and root can be ensured.
